WALKING TRAILS
There are three trails on the lodge property available for your walking pleasure during daylight hours. Information regarding wildlife and plant life is posted on each trail. Please stay on the trail; the summer vegetation is very delicate and fragile. Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints and keep the memories.
CHULITNA RIVER TRAIL
The Chulitna River Trail is a short scenic trail, designed more for a stroll than hiking. The only hill is at the end of the trail leading up to the parking lot. This trail can be completed in 10 to 30 minutes depending on the time you take to stop and enjoy the beauty that is Denali. To get to the trailhead, take the stairway from the lodge deck, and cross the road to the gravel path leading down the hill. Following the path you will soon reach the "Sportsman" overlook, a good place to take in the beauty of the Chulitna River, the Alaska Range and enjoy the tranquility and peace of the area. A short distance later, you will reach the "Black Bear" overlook. The Chulitna River begins about 50 miles north of this overlook where the west, middle, and east forks come together, drawing some of the southern flank of the Alaska Range in the Denali National Park and mountains east of Broad Pass. Continuing along the path you will notice evergreen and deciduous trees dominated by black spruce, paper birch, and cottonwood, plus many varieties of plants and shrubs. The path will come to a construction road, but do not turn left; turn right and follow the road. The path will end at the southwest corner of the parking lot. Cross the parking lot to the lodge road and turn left to return to the lodge. The total distance is slightly less than one half of a mile (three-quarters of a kilometer).
HILL TRAIL
The Hill Trail is the most strenuous trail of the three we have to offer, it also has some of the most scenic overlooks. This trail does have a steep incline at the beginning. Leave from the front door of the lodge. Turn to the left, and go clockwise on the lodge road. Take the path up the hill to the "Moose" overlook, here a view of the Alaska Range and Mt. McKinley is possible. Moose vary widely and are observed from the river bottoms to Curry Ridge browsing for food. Continue up the hill to the path leading to the "Grizzly Bear" overlook. Here, you will find a higher and more impressive view of the mountains and the Chulitna River. From the "Winged" overlook you will have a good view of the lodge complex and the mountains. One hundred and thirty one birds have been identified in a number of locations, and the Tokositna River lowland (10 miles west of the lodge) provides very important habitat for nesting and fledging. This area also provides sites for several active bald eagle nests. The trail comes to an end as you walk down the opposite side of the hill where you will reach the road going to the lodge. Turn right and follow the road to the lodge. The total distance of this trail is one and one-fifth miles (1.7 kilometers).
BOTANICAL WALKING TRAIL
The Botanical Walking Trail offers the perfect opportunity to take in the beautiful flora of the Alaskan wilderness. This trail is located near building 17; to get to the trail from the lodge you will go out the front doors and then turn to your right on the lodge road. You will walk by the parking lots located on your right until you see building 17 (two-story building on the right hand side). Next walk towards building 17 but before arriving at the building stay right and the trailhead will be found at the corner of the road which leads behind building 17. The length of the Botanical Walking Trail is about one half of a mile (three quarters of a kilometer) and follows fairly even terrain (only one very short steep incline). Interpretive placards along the trail identify about 25 different plants. The food, medicinal and traditional uses discussed on this trail are for the most part site specific. The Dena'ina (Tanaina) Athabascans inhabited this area and it is their utilization of the local flora that is presented. Some of the plants you may see on this trail include: shelf mushrooms, high-bush cranberries, club moss, dwarf dogwood, old man's beard lichen, several varieties of fern, and many others.
GUEST LAUNDRY
Although you may think of "laundry" as a dirty word, sometimes even when you are on vacation laundry needs arise. Look no further than to our Guest Laundry Room.
PARK RANGER INTERPRETIVE SESSIONS
Princess is pleased to have State and National Park Rangers available on selected days to help introduce you to the wilderness around you - Denali. Programs vary in content from nature walks on the Lodge Trails to presentations on the native culture of the area, mountaineering, and animal and plant life. If you are curious about the Park, come prepared with your questions! Admission is free of charge.
PHOTOSYMPHONY
"Denali: Song of the Land" is a beautiful panoramic display of Alaskan imagery set to classical music. Spectacular views of Denali, natural scenery, wildlife and even glimpses of the Northern Lights all play a part in this 35-minute show. Photosymphony, created specifically for the guests of Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge, features some of the best work of well-known Alaskan photographer LeRoy Zimmerman. Photo Symphony is shown in the Mt. Foraker Room.
